AKSUNA YACHTING BLUE VOYAGE TOUR

Kemer - Antalya - Turkey

Blue voyage

The Blue Voyage is a sailing/motoring cruise on any stretch of the cleanest waters in the world between Bodrum to Antalya, where deep blue mingles with the green of the evergreen forest covered coastline. Ancient cities such as Knidos, Caunos, Telmessos, Antiphellos, Myra, Olympus, Phaselis and the rock-tombs in the Lycian cities are there for your exploration if requested and your yacht could be sailing through from the antique regions of Karia, the Lycian and then on to the Pamphylia region. Everyday a new cove, a new bay to be explored. Endless natural beauty and history are enjoyed whilst cruising under the Mediterranean sun.

As the Mediterranean coastline of Turkey is a treasure-chest of coves, inlets, bays and beaches, yachtsmen can easily choose a different and private anchorage each night. For lovers of the active life, sailing in the clear waters provides great opportunities for swimming, fishing, water skiing, wind surfing and diving.

It also allows you to experience a truly enriching cultural exchange with the hospitable and gracious people of the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds which generally blow from the west and northwest make the long summers ideal for the blue voyage. From some of the Turquoise coast's unspoiled and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

The pleasure of "Blue Voyaging" in Turkey will tempt you to return again and again, to explore yet another stretch of coast and to relieve the luxurious ease of life on the sea.

Life On Board
The modern gulets are equipped as comfortably as many small hotels, with generators and deep freeze. They offer the perfect atmosphere for a lazy holiday in which you are expected to do nothing that you do not wish to do. Days are spent swimming or exploring the turquoise deep with your snorkel, reading your favorite novel, trying the delicious Turkish cuisine, drinking something wonderful, sun bathing, windsurfing, playing cards and generally relaxing.

Water and jet skis are available for rent from most beaches and land trips to plenty of ancient ruins are extras. You can even fish for your supper which the cook will gladly prepare for you. Mealtimes are another form of entertainment with exquisite Turkish cuisine and wonderful conversation. Having a meal under the stars on a calm sea gently lapping the sides of the boat is an experience not to be missed. It is like a holiday in a hotel with all the rooms overlooking the sea but every day the scenery changes. For those who prefer a different view each day and are prepared for the changing moods of Mother Nature then a holiday on a gulet is the perfect solution.

What to bring with you ?
You only need casual wear; non slip foot wear, your swimming gear, a sun hat, some T-shirts and shorts, a sweater for cool evenings excursions and walks, blue jeans and strong footwear. Instead of one large suitcase, we recommend that you use two smallish soft bags as they are far more convenient when it comes to stowing them away in your cabin. What else? Some towels, a mini first aid kit including antihistamine cream plus toiletries.

Soap, one hand towel each plus bedding is provided. For the gentlemen who don't want to grow a holiday beard, a battery operated razor and shaving soap is essential. Please be forewarned that electrical appliances may only be connected whilst the yacht is tied up in port, so please have everything readily recharged.

Security
With the safety and enjoyment she offers, a gulet is the best initiation to yachting. Anyone can travel on a gulet. The crew is accustomed to the needs of the new passengers. The greatest phobia of landlubbers-seasickness-may start in a few hours but normally will soon disappear very quickly. The blue voyage consists of motoring or sailing stretches of that keep the yacht motoring or sailing for only 2 to 4 hours per day, from one secure bay to another.

Your Crew
On a gulet, the crew is responsible for serving the passengers, as well as running the yacht. Crews usually consist of a Captain, Cook and Seaman/Mechanic and on the larger gulets a fourth crew member will be at your service. They are very friendly ensuring a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time extremely professional knowing the coastal waters and their yachts inside out. Due to their life on the sea, the crew members have a mind of information on the local history and surroundings being able to advise (using their practical language skills) on the best places to snorkel and anchor etc. Also you can get some super tips from the cook on local cuisine. Of course they are all water sport lovers and some even good divers. The crew will be glad to help out as far as their duties will permit and are there to give you an unforgettable Blue Voyage making you want to return just as the majority of our clients do.

Complete Yacht Charter
For families and for friends who wish to join up for a private cruise, the chartering of the entire yacht, including crew is advantageous in every respect. As a private party, you are free to charter the yacht of your choice for any agreed period of time and you may also determine the route. You may provide the provisions or you can let Eser do the shopping thus saving you all that unnecessary hassle in the heat by just paying the daily rate for full board. There are no sailing grounds more beautiful than the entire Turkish Coast between Bodrum to the north-west of Marmaris and Antalya to the south-east.

We'll provide only the basics of your voyage's program and then you'll be free to settle the rest of the details together with the Captain during the cruise. He will be happy to comply with your wishes, weather permitting.

Days on board are always eventful and may differ greatly from each other depending on what Mother Nature has to offer. Quiet little bays with crystal clear waters or a lusty wind favorite for sailing, some ancient ruins beckoning on a hillside or a busy quaint little seaside town which you might like to visit.

You can just let yourself drift along from day to day permitting the yacht to take the strain and enjoy the cruise in complete relaxation. All this adding up to make a perfectly special "Blue Voyage".

Cabin Charter
Cruises for singles or couples are great fun. They are designed for people who wish to make the holiday a totally new experience alongside new friends. Such cruises are often multi-national affairs, which make them especially interesting. These 'Blue Voyages" always start and finish on Saturdays in Marmaris. Boarding starting at 15:00 hours depending on flight arrivals. The yacht actually leaves the harbour on Sunday morning after breakfast.

Although following a set route, no place is visited twice during any cruise, so that your last day on board will be as interesting as your first. Full board is included in the price, served in an open buffet style with beverages and alcoholic drinks being bought from the yacht's bar. Please note that any land tours will be at an extra charge and are optional.

Your yacht will arrive back late Friday afternoon enabling a final night in the high life of Marmaris before disembarking latest 10:00 on Saturday morning.

MARMARIS - FINIKE - MARMARIS ( Saturday - Saturday )

DAY 1 : When all members of your group have arrived, the Captain will order you a welcome cocktail and give some information about the cruise. The first night we'll stay in Marmaris Harbour so that you'll have ample time to get acquainted with this friendly little town and maybe participate in its night life.
DAY 2 : After breakfast we'll depart on a southerly course for Kadırga Bay where you may enjoy yourself with bathing and windsurfing while the crew prepares lunch. Later in the day we set sails for Semirce Bay, our anchorage for the night.
DAY 3 : If you choose the land tour, a small river boat will come and fetch us for an excursion into the delta of Dalyan River. First we'll be taken to the ruins of ancient Caunos and then we'll go on upriver to the sulfur mud baths which are great fun. On our return into the delta, we may spend some time on the extensive, sandy beaches of Dalyan and bathe in the shallows there before our boat takes us back to our yacht. On the beaches of Dalyan no visitors are permitted after nightfall because these are one of the last breeding grounds of the Mediterranean sea turtle.
DAY 4 : We are going to weigh anchor very early in the morning so that we may catch the strong wind which is usually blowing off Dalaman beach in the first hours of the day. We'll sail on to Gemili Island. This is a perfect place for the explorers amongst you. It is covered with ruins, some Byzantanic, some much older, but history knows nothing about the people who lived there.
DAY 5 : Today's destination is the little harbour of Kalkan, which we'll reach at some time in the afternoon. There we'll have the chance to rent a minibus which will take us to Xanthos, once the most important town of Lycia, then to the ancient holy place, Letoon and last of all to Patara, a Lycian harbour town, half buried under huge sand dunes.
DAY 6 : Today we'll set course for Kekova with its wealth of beautiful bays and islands, many of them with traces of continuous inhabitation for more than 200 years. Through the clear water you can recognize ancient ruins on the bottom of the sea and you can feast your eyes on the impressive castle which the Lycians built, the Romans have enlarged and the Selchuks have restored. For the night we'll anchor at Gökgemili, a little bay on the eastern tip of Kekova Island.
DAY 7 : In the morning we'll weigh anchor for an excursion to ancient Myra with its Lycian rock tombs and its great Roman Theatre and to the church of St. Nicholas in Demre. Then a trip to beautiful Arycanda is possible, a Lycian town built on seven terraces high up in the mountains. On our way down, we may stop by a fish farm and purchase fresh mountain trout for tonight's dinner.
DAY 8 : This day is mainly dedicated to swimming, snorkeling and windsurfing in the quiet bays of Kekova. In the afternoon we'll go on to Kaş, a quaint little Mediterranean town. There, we'll stay for the night and explore the many tiny souvenir shops and lovely little bars with live music
DAY 9 : Today we are going to spend more time than usual underway, because we have to cover a distance of 60 sea miles to our next destination, the famous lagoon "Ölüdeniz", with its turquoise water and snow white sandy beach. For the night we'll drop anchor in one of the nearby coves.
DAY 10 : After breakfast we'll set course for Fethiye Bay. In the evening we'll make fast in Fethiye's marina. The town is a lively touristic centre with may shops and open air lively touristic centre with may ships and open air restaurants lining the streets. Of course there is also a disco. The Lycian graves in the rock wall in the back of the town, amongst them the tomb of Prince Amyntas, constitute a striking contrast to the modern architecture of today's Fethiye.
DAY 11 : In the morning we'll depart from Fethiye for the Yassıca Islands in the western part of the bay where we shall spend some time swimming and windsurfing. For the night we'll anchor in Tersane Island. Many centuries ago the people who lived in this region used to build their wooden ships here. Some ruins of the old shipyards are still visible.
DAY 12 : There is such a wealth of beautiful little bays, many of them with the forest coming right down to the edge of the water, which it is difficult to choose amongst them. We'll simply unfurl the sails and see in which direction the wind takes us.
DAY 13 : Our last stop within Fethiye Bay is Dişibilmez. That’s a paradise for snorkeling fans. People who are fond of hiking are attracted by Ağa Limanı and the hilly forested country surrounding it.
DAY 14 : On our way to Marmaris, we'll stop behind Nimara Island for lunch. There we'll put in some more hours of swimming and snorkeling before we'll have to weigh anchor for Marmaris in time to arrive whilst the sun is setting.
DAY 15 : It’s time for our last breakfast on board then to say good bye until we meet again - some other time - for another cruise.

WHAT IS A TURKISH GULET?
A gulet is a traditional handmade wooden boat equipped with masts. The most common gulets have 6 to 8 double cabins and so accommodate max.12 to 16 passengers. Unlike cruises on large ocean liners, on a gulet you can explore the secluded and often deserted bays, coves and islands of the spectacular Turkish coastline. You will see a hidden Turkey, beautiful beyond belief, and most of it completely unseen by the average tourist! During the day there are plenty of chances to swim and snorkel in the clear blue waters or explore the natural and historical sites along the way.

Features of a gulet include an interior salon/bar area and a fully equipped galley. All cabins have en-suite with hot and cold running water. There are 1 or 2 sundecks with comfortable sunbeds and a canopied aft deck with cushioned seating, freezers to keep drinks cold, and a CD/cassette player. The gulets come with facilities for outdoor and indoor dining. Also a dinghy with outboard, a ship-to-shore radio, mobile telephone and life jackets are on board. All the boats are government approved with fully qualified captains. No experience of boats is required. All you need to do is relax!

WHAT IS THE BLUE VOYAGE?
The Blue Voyage is the surest way to get rid of all of your blues, but that is not really how the name was coined... Originated in Bodrum in the late 1950's by groups of writers, painters, and others interested in natural beauty and historical sites, the Blue Voyage started in the Gulf of Gökova and later extended to include the more distant southern shores of Turkey.

WHAT IS A CREWED YACHT CHARTER?
A crewed yacht charter is the hire of a complete yacht, with captain and crew, for a specific period of time (usually one or more weeks). TURKEY CHARTER BLUE VOYAGE TOUR

Fethiye - Muğla - Turkey

WHAT IS A GULET?

Imagine wooden sailing boats thousands of years ago carrying cargos of wine and copper across the Aegean to trade with ancient civilization, or fishing boat earning a living from the Mediterranean teerning with fish. Such boats were built along the Aegean coast of Turkey and many of the skills and designs used then have been passed down to today's boat builders.

The Turkish gullet is very similar to the working boats of old times and, equipped with engines and modem facilities, they allow you to explore the beautiful Turkish coast in comfort and style and relive sprint an age long past.

Poseidon A gulets, from 33 meters long, are also very wide, so there is plenty of space below for large cabins and above for you to sunbathe, sit under the shade of a sun awning and eat outside comfortably around a dining table on the aft deck. 8-20 people can be accommodated in double cabins, all with private shower and wc. Even with up 20 guests the tanks provide plenty of water for hot showers. Still there is room for a fully equipped galley, where the cook prepares your meals from the freshest local produce.

What could be more romantic than cruising on a traditional wooden boat with all the sails up under blue cloudless skies? Holidays, are on a full board basis. Complimentary water is served at meat times and excellent bar service is also provided with competitive prices. Your Captain can at any time arrange water skiing, jet skis, rungoes even bananas and scuba diving (at an additional cost).

WHAT TO BRING

Travel light is our best advice to you, swim wear and tee shirts is all you will you need on board in the daytime. In the evenings people dress casually, but bring sweaters and trousers if you are coming in the cooler months to use on the boat. On board we provide hand and bath towels please bring your own beach towels. All this should be packed into a soft bag, not a suitcase, which can be folded and stowed away to give more room in your cabin.

The Mediterranean sun is very bright and on a moving boat hotter than you think, be sure to pack sunglasses, a good suntan lotion and a hat. If mosquitoes find you tasty then bring mosquito repellant and a camera is an absolute must. Small touches that our guests, feel as though they are on a floating, five star hotel. Specially selected stoneware plates, granite galley counters, creative dinner settings, oversized wine glasses, custom bathrobes, fine linens, a selection of music CDs and books complement the first class service provided by her highly experienced crew.

TRADITIONAL TURKISH GULET

The singular design of the gulette, Turkey's indigenous sea-going vessel, blends practicality and tradition in a relaxed style that embodies the Blue Voyage. Over the years gulettes have evolved from traditional fishing and cargo vessels into their present profile of a broad beam and wide deck.

These boats are equipped with motors as well as fully functional rigging. The number of passengers a gulette carries depends on the boat's size, although most of them accommodate between eight and twelve people.

These vessels have speparate accommodation for passengers, and chartering one will also include services and entertainment. Modern gulettes are comfortably equipped with most home comforts, and encourages a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for all the passengers with a friendly relationship with the crew.

A new concept in marine literature - the Turkish gullet. These boats' sizes vary between 15 and 30 meters and are constructed in Turkey along traditional lines by sea-faring family firms using slightly changed techniques over the centuries. However, they have been adapted to the most stringent of traveler's requirements and now offer luxury and good taste not found in any other craft of similar history and background.

Gullets make ideal charter boats - which is their main use in Turkey. Full cooking facilities are fitted and gullets are built for long sea voyages as well as inshore coastal trips. They make an ideal holiday home in which to explore offshore areas in comfort and style. They are floating exceptions for recreational activities - and it is this aspect which could be the gullets most exciting adaptation to the gulf.

Tourism is now becoming an area of increasing importance and gullet sailing would be a very popular option for hotels to offer visitors. Corporate entertaining would take on a new dimension if it took place on a traditional wooden boat - reminiscent of the Ottomans in the eastern Mediterranean. The climate in Turkey also makes a gullet the ideal place to entertain your friends or business visitors.

Traditionally hand made by master craftsmen, attractive wooden motor sailers (gulets) are our fleet of comfortable vessels are ideal for charters. Gulets broad, beamy hulls give spacious decks and high headroom below. The foredeck makes a large sun bathing area and the huge aftdeck provides a shady cushioned area for relaxing and eating al fresco. The saloon is fitted with a bar, library and for your enterainment HI-FI system, as per your request TV and telephone.

Light and airy below decks, each cabin has a double or twin berths some also have an upper single bunk. All cabins have opening port holes, and a large number of boats have ducted airconditioning. Each cabin has en-suite hot and cold shower, basin and wc. All gulettes have plenty of storage fresh water and fuel. Fridges, freezers and ice-boxes keep provisions fresh allowing you to stay away from port for days and enjoy your your holiday to the upmost. Sail are raaised infavouruble breezes but guletes tend to rely on their powerful engines.

The yacht types are in two main categories:

Traditional wooden yachts:
The traditional wooden yachts are built mainly in Bodrum and other parts of Southwest Turkey. In Northern Black Sea Region the boat yards usually built fishing boats, but some beautiful traditional yachts are being constructed recently. These boats built handmade by local carpenters.

They use generally pine or oak wood for the skeleton of the boats, the skeleton cover is made of pine or tetra, the deck teak, the cabins pine or mahagony, the masts white oak wood or iron. The boats are both motor and sailing yachts. Yacht charters take place on comfortable, locally built wooden yachts of several designs and sizes:

Gullet : The most popular type of traditional yacht for the "Blue Cruise" is the gullet. It is a cruising yacht with large, rounded stern area which is well-suited for comfartable eating and lounging. Gullets usually have ketch (marconi) or schooner-rigging, with one, two or three foresails. Their lenghts change between 15 to 33 meters and they accommodate 6 to 16 persons in 3 to 8 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC.

Aynakıç : It has a raised, squared-off stern that allows space for additional cabins below compared to a gullet. There may be a large master cabin at the stern. They accommodate 8 to 24 persons in 4 to 12 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC. They are generally ketch (marconi)-rigging and measure 18 to 33 meters.

Tirhandil : It is the oldest type of local wooden boat with a pointed stern which is suited best for sailing in Aegean waters. Originally most had lateen sails; now the rigging varies from sloop to cutter to gaff. They normally measure between 11 to 18 meters in lenght and accommodate 6 to 8 persons in 3 to 4 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC.

SAILING ETAPS

With over 8,333 km of coastline along the four seas, Turkey is a treasure chest of coves, inlets, bays and beaches at which yachtsmen can choose a different, private anchorage each night. The sailing paradise of Turkey is also home to the Blue Voyage. This idyllic cruise means sailing with the winds, into coves and over the seas and becoming one with nature.

It is also an experience of the history of man from the perspective of the sea rather than from the land, a journey which carries you to the private beach of Cleopatra, the eternal fires of remains of ancient civilizations. For lovers of the active life, sailing in clear waters provides great opportunities for swimming, fishing, skiing, surfing and diving.

SAILING ETAPS - 1

From Izmir to Kuşadası : Like Homer's Odyssey

Known in Turkish as "Beautiful Izmir", the city lies at the head of a long and narrow gulf furrowed by ships and yachts. The climate is mild, and in the summer the constant and refreshing sea breezes temper the sun's heat. Behind the palm-lined promenades and avenues which follow the shoreline, the city, in horizontal terraces, gently ascends the slopes of the surrounding mountains. A cosmopolitan and lively city, galleries, theatres and cultural events give Izmir its special vibrancy. The original settlement was established in the third millennium B.C. and represented the most advanced culture in western Anatolia at that time. Over the years this thriving city and the surrounding area had come under the sovereignty of the Hittites, Ionians, Lydians, Persians, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans.

Levent Marina provides an excellent place to begin a yachting adventure. Sailing in and around the beautiful Gulf of Izmir will prepare voyagers for the wonderful sites that lie ahead. At Urla İskelesi, the small islands that dot the coast will certainly charm you. Beautiful beaches and excellent moorings with swimming, snorkelling and diving are all available in the area.

From Urla Iskelesi sail on to the Karaburun Peninsula. At Karaburun, pleasant hotels, tea gardens and fish restaurants sit between the beautiful mountain backdrop and the clear, clean water. Voyage out of the Gulf of Izmir around the Karaburun Peninsula to the Çeşme Peninsula, a spit of land lapped by the waters of the Aegean Sea. Çeşme, meaning 'fountain', derives its name from the many sources of water found in the area. A 14th century Genoese fortress, restored and enlarged by the Ottomans in the 16th century, dominates the small port of Çeşme.

Around Çeşme, the large Altın Yunus Setur Marina complex and the berthing places of Ilıca and Dalyan are all noted for their safety. In town, the l6th century caravanserai built by Süleyman the Magnificent near the fortress, has been converted into a hotel. Excellent shopping - the finest quality carpets, leather goods, as well as souvenir items are available. At night, a lively, fun atmosphere pervades, especially in the restaurants, cafes, bars and discos along the promenade. In July, Çeşme's International Song Contest attracts world famous performers who add glamour and excitement to the town. The thermal baths in the area, along with the natural springs found right off the coast and which mix with the sea water in Ilıca Bay, provide soothing relaxation.

Southeast of Çeşme, beautiful bays offer splendid scenery and tranquil night moorings in complete safety from the winds and waves. Soon you will arrive at Sığacık, where a picturesque marina rests beneath fortifications that date from the Genoese period. From here, the antique site of Teos, noted for its Temple of Dionysus, the god of wine, is conveniently close. It is also an excellent area in which to sample some of Turkey's superb wines.

The Kuşadası Gulf opens to the south and south-east with some of the most enticing beaches, bays and coves on the Aegean coast.

SAILING ETAPS - 2

Sailing From Kuşadası to Bodrum : St. John's Heritage Rediscovered

Kuşadası is today a major holiday resort centre. During the summer months it teems with swimmers, fishermen, sun-lovers and sightseers. Once known as Scala Nova, the town boasts wonderful seafood restaurants, cafes, beautiful parks and superb beaches. The shopping is also famous; everything from beads and bangles to leather, jewellery and carpets is on offer.

The Kuşadası Turban Marina is one of the best-equipped marinas in Turkey, providing wintering for boats both afloat and on shore. Scuba diving has become very popular. Nightlife is renowned along the coast with excellent bars, jazz clubs, discos and cabarets that promise evenings filled with excitement, entertainment and possibly a little romance.

Not far from Kuşadası, the ancient site of Ephesus, an important city of antiquity, remains a highlight of any visit to Turkey. The city, whose wealth and patronage supported its splendid architectural program, was dedicated to the goddess Artemis. Her enormous temple, rebuilt several times, dates in its latest form from the third century B.C. and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The ancient theatre has found new life as a major concert venue. Nearby is the site of St. John's Basilica and the reputed last home of the Virgin Mary.

South of Kuşadası, the unbelievably beautiful waters of the Dilek Peninsula National Park welcome yachtsmen into its serene inlets and coves.

Between Kuşadası's southern shores and Pamukkale lies the valley of the Menderes River (the Meander), where several ancient civilisations built major settlements, including Priene, Milet, Didyma (Didim), Aphrodisias and Hierapolis (Pamukkale).

The Temple of Apollo at Didim was one of the most sacred places of antiquity. Many times looted and burned, the sanctuary still impresses with its elegant beauty. Not far from this archaeological site, the beautiful beach of Altınkum tempts all visitors and offers a great opportunity for sailing, swimming and relaxation. It is the last stop before entering the Güllük Gulf.

This gulf can provide a whole vacation in itself with four large natural bays and numerous coves and inlets. The whole area has excellent moorings, and scuba divers will be particularly interested in exploring these waters. The fisherman's village of Güllük has a pretty port and numerous guest-houses and small hotels. The mythological Dolphin Boy is said to have been born a little farther to the north at Kıyıkışlacık (Iassos). As you sail out of this beautiful gulf, the Bodrum Peninsula welcomes you.

Sailing From Bodrum to Marmaris : Blessed with the Love of Aphrodite

Bodrum, on the north shore of the Guff of Gökova, was the home of the first "Blue Voyager", Cevat Şakir Kabaağaç or the "Fisherman of Halikarnas". It is the undisputed "hot-spot" of the Aegean Coast. This swinging, singing, dancing town, with its bohemian atmosphere, gathers together Turkeys artists, intellectuals and lovers of the good life.

An impressive medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes guards the entrance to Bodrum's dazzling blue bay, in which the Aegean and the Mediterranean Seas meet. The Bodrum Castle now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Known in ancient times as Halicarnassus, Bodrum is the birthplace of Heredotus and the site of King Mausolus's Tomb (4th century B.C.), one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.

The yearly throng of visitors has encouraged small entrepreneurs who have made shopping in Bodrum a delight. Souvenirs abound, and on certain streets local artists gather to sell their works - works that come in all forms.

The Bodrum Turban Marina is one of the loveliest and best-equipped marinas in the region.

A yachting tour of the Gulf of Gökova starts in Bodrum. The translucent and deep waters of the Gulf on the southern shore of the Bodrum Peninsula vary from the darkest blue to the palest turquoise, and the coastline is thickly wooded with every hue of green. In the evening, the sea reflects the mountains silhouetted against the setting sun, while at night it shimmers with phosphorescence.

One of the best anchorage is the splendidly scenic Akbük, hidden behind a forested promontory. The excellent cozy restaurants are as good a reason as any to linger for a tasty meal after an afternoon of snorkelling and diving. Sedir Island (ancient Cedrai) boasts an incredible beach with fine sand composed of fossils, and a splendid view of the Kıran mountains across the bay.

As you sail along the island's south-western coast, forests stretch out to meet the deep inlets of the bays. The jagged coastline, known as the Bay of Sixty-Six Inlets, seems to have emerged from the oft-told tales of pirates.

The waters of the Gulf of Hisarönü lap the breathtaking shores that hold the legacy of both ancient and modern civilisations. At the end of the Datça Peninsula stands the ancient Carian city of Knidos, described by Strabo as "a city that was built for the most beautiful of goddesses, Aphrodite, on the most beautiful of peninsulas." Famous as a centre of art and culture in the fourth century B.C., the city had two harbours: one on the Aegean and the other on the Mediterranean. The remains of a circular temple dedicated to the goddess of love overlook remains of the two harbours; the arcade way was built of white marble heart-shaped columns. The legendary Aphrodite of Praxiteles statue, reputedly one of the most beautiful sculptures of antiquity, once graced this temple.

The town of Datça has become a popular stopover for yachtsmen, and offers many colourful seafood restaurants, pubs and discotheques.

In the Gulf of Hisarönü is the peaceful Keçi Bükü Bay; the Bay Marina is rich in natural beauty: the surrounding mountains and forests, and the long "Kızkumu" (sunken 'pier'), a natural sand formation. Leaving the Gulf of Hisarönü: hidden away in its own exclusive inlet is the town of Bozburun, famous as one of the gullet-building centres of Turkey. Loryma, at the tip of the Bozburun Peninsula where the ruins of the ancient harbour and castle remain, can only be reached by boat. Kumlubük, a turquoise paradise, lies on the southern side of the bay; on the north side, above the water, stands the ancient Rhodian city of Amos. At Turunç a natural harbour opens out into a wide expanse of spectacular blue water. The next port is Marmaris.

Sailing From Marmaris to Fethiye: In the Steps of St. Pacil

Marmaris Bay resembles a calm lake and offers ideal mooring for yachts. Ancient Marmaris, Physkos, was an important stage on the Anatolia - Rhodes - Egypt trade route. In the 16th century, Süleyman the Magnificent had a citadel built on a hill just behind the harbour; today, its remains house the Marmaris Museum. Pine forests cover the mountains which surround Marmaris; on shore a white line of sand and rock separates green from blue. The beach areas sparkle, and provide visitors with a perfect opportunity to dive, snorkel and swim in relaxing conditions.

Yachts and boats decorate the coast of this lovely tourist centre where thousands converge to enjoy a fun-filled, self-indulgent holiday. Those who surf and water-ski will thrill at the conditions in Marmaris. Energetic entertainment at a lively bar, or dancing until dawn at a sophisticated discotheque can end an ideal day.

There are many good buys in Marmaris's boutiques, colourful bazaars and markets. You can find excellent leather and suede goods, copper and brassware, jewellery, and objects carved of onyx. Turkish carpets, textiles and embroidery make good handcrafted souvenirs, and the locally produced pine-scented honey called çam balı is superb.

The Marmaris Netsel Marina, one of the largest and best-equipped marinas in Turkey, and the Marmaris Albatros Marina, one of the best for wintering and maintaining yachts, make Marmaris an excellent starting point for the Blue Voyage tour of the Aegean Coast. In May, the Marmaris Yacht Charter Show provides an opportunity to meet the captains and their crews. With plenty of provisions aboard, you set sail in the craft of your choice and languidly explore the spectacular beauty of southern Turkey.

At Ekincik, a delightful yacht-mooring, you can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of this area and the friendly hospitality of its people.

Delikli Island lies right off the coast, south-east of Ekincik. Yachtsmen enjoy a change of pace when they anchor at the island and take a smaller craft excursion into the Dalyan Delta. The Delta, with a long, golden, sandy beach at its mouth, is a nature-conservation area, and a refuge for sea turtles (caretta caretta) and blue crabs. At a bend in the river, high on the cliff face above the fascinating ancient harbour-city of Caunos, magnificent tombs were carved into the rock. From Delikli Island, sailing south-east, you arrive at Sarıgerme with its pleasant holiday complexes, nestled in cozy pine forests. Yachtsmen will want to anchor at Baba Island, across from the pristine sandy beaches.

The Gulf of Göçek, with the friendly Club Marina set in a beautiful pine forest, is one of the Mediterranean's best sailing spots. Dotted with islands and indented with many coves, its land and seascapes are irresistible. The ruins of Arymexa, an ancient city at the southern tip of the gulf, lie at the edge of the azure waters. Opposite on Tersane Island, stand Byzantine ruins, including those of the ancient shipyards. From the Gulf of Göçek sail on into Fethiye.

Sailing From Fethiye to Kaş: A Lycian Dream (Dolphin's Playground)

The secrets of the ancient gods of mythology still lie hidden in the secluded coves and bays around the Gulf of Fethiye. This is truly paradise for those who want to sail through history. The resort town of Fethiye has an important marina and overlooks a beautiful bay strewn with islands.

Above the town, called Telmessos in antiquity, numerous Lycian rock tombs, reproducing the facades of ancient buildings, were cut into the cliff face. Explore the Belceğiz Bay and the beautiful Blue Lagoon (Ölü Deniz), where the calm, crystal-clear water is ideal for swimming and other water sports. On Gemiler Island, Byzantine ruins lie tucked among the pines.

Go ashore at Kınık (65 km from Fethiye) where the ruins of Xanthos, the ancient Lycian capital, lie in a splendid natural setting. At the holy Lycian centre of Letoon, three temples dedicated to Leto, Apollo and Artemis, familiar gods of mythology, await the intrepid tourist. Mythology records that Apollo was born at Patara, a principal harbour of ancient Lycia, south of Letoon and Xanthos. The ruins are of course numerous and fascinating. Its 22 kilometres of pure white sand stretch as far as the eye can see, making it a natural choice for all types of beach sports.

A short sail to the east brings you to Kalkan, a lovely small hilltop town that overlooks a tiny bay. Narrow, winding streets lined with souvenir shops lead down to the charming marina. Every morning, boats busily take tourists to one of the nearby beaches or small bays. As the sun sets, it is Kalkan style to meet on the roof-terraces for a drink before dinner, and enjoy the comings and goings of the yachts, the business of the marina and the panoramic view.

Sailing From Kaş to Antalya: A Lycian Dream (Coast of Light)

Like most towns on the Lycian coast Kaş lies wedged between mountains and sea. Kaş, once ancient Antiphellus, still exhibits a few remains of the old settlement. An ancient theatre on Kaş's long peninsula is within walking distance of the town.

Kekova, "home of the sun", is an island an hour from Dalyanağzı by sea, as well as the name of a whole ensemble of picturesque islands, numerous bays and ancient cities. These bays provide natural harbours in all seasons, and yachtsmen particularly enjoy exploring the unspoilt landscapes. Along the northern shore of Kekova Island, at Apollonia, earthquakes have disturbed the land causing some of the ancient houses to sink under the clear water, creating a sunken city.

Kaleköy Castle (ancient Simena) offers a bird's-eye view of the bays, inlets, islands and colourful yachts sailing peacefully on the glassy water. The colours in a Van Gogh painting, blue skies, orange sunsets, starry, starry nights, peace and tranquillity, playful dolphins, mythological mysteries, and the sparkling sea - Kekova provides all this and more.

At Demre (Kale), the ancient Myra, (25 km west of Finike), many splendidly carved rock tombs overlook the magnificent Roman theatre. St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) was the bishop of this Mediterranean city during the fourth century and died here in 342. An official entry-port, Finike is surrounded by citrus trees and gardens. Thirty-two kilometres from the Finike Marina lie the remains of the beautiful and ancient Lycian city of Arikanda. This excursion inland, a mountain trek, rewards you with superb views, fabulous ruins and fresh mountain air.

Slipping around the Kırlangıç Peninsula brings you into the Gulf of Antalya. The first sight you come to is the ancient city of Olympos, on the southern side of Mt. Tahtalı (Mt. Olympos). Oleander and laurel bushes shade the Olympos Valley, which you can approach by land as well as by sea. Nearby at Yanartaş (at a height of 300 meters), according to mythology, the Lycian hero Bellerophon, mounted on his winged horse Pegasus slew the fire-breathing monster, Chimaera. Gas which seeps from the earth burns brightly at night. The Byzantines also considered this place a religious area.

Alexander the Great's favourite winter resort was at Phaselis, the famous ancient commercial harbour north of Olympos. South of the harbour, look up at Mt. Tahtalı for a spectacular view. Sail on to Kemer, a resort town carefully designed to blend in with the surrounding scenery, that offers an ideal environment for a wonderful holiday. The fully equipped Turban Marina has facilities for all activities so that yachtsmen can enjoy the unspoilt bays and beaches south of the town. Shoppers will delight at the wonderful range of high quality souvenirs. April is the month of the colourful Kemer Carnival. Also in the spring are the yacht races between Kemer and Girne in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Sailing around this coast towards Antalya will give you a glimpse of some of Turkeys most modern and luxurious holiday villages. Antalya, Turkey's principal holiday resort city on the Mediterranean, embodies the contrast between the majestic coastline of beaches and rocky coves, and the towering Taurus Mountains. The ancient Attaleia, named after King Attalus II of Pergamon, Antalya was founded in the 2nd century B.C. Today palm-lined boulevards, beautiful parks, historical buildings, monuments, museums and the picturesque old quarter Kaleiçi, (with the Kaleiçi Turban Marina) blend together to create an ideal holiday atmosphere.

The Antalya Marina and Leisure Centre, which has won several awards, is considered one of the most beautiful marinas in Turkey; Setur Marina, the other marina in Antalya, is, on the other hand, quiet and peaceful; but both welcome you after your unforgettable voyage in the turquoise paradise of Turkey's water.
